From Wine Enthusiast's 2020 Winemaker of the Year, this spectacular Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills has consistently received stellar reviews from the top critics. In fact, this is probably the best decorated Pinot Noir in the store, with multiple reviews of 95+ points!! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Only 32 barrels produced 2018 Brewer-Clifton Machado Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills "The 2018 Pinot Noir Machado is pure class, showing beautiful purity of fruit as well as classic Sta. Rita Hills complexity and spice. Lots of raspberry, strawberry, spring flowers, forest floor, spice, and just a touch of seaside-like iodine all emerge from the glass. It's a wonderfully complete, balanced, seamless 2018 that does everything right." --Jeb Dunnuck, 97 Points!!! "Joyous and aromatically arresting scents of creamy black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and black cardamom grab hold of the nose and don't waver on this bottling. Deep and dark fruit flavors mix with hints of dank herb, tarragon and even cannabis on the palate, where the acidity is penetrating and persistent." --Wine Enthusiast, 96 Points!!! 95 Points, Wine Spectator 95 Points, Wine Advocate Winery Notes: VINEYARD: Looking to secure a mirror-image sister ranch to our 3D Vineyard, we began working with the Machado family in the winter of 2008. Our 15 acre parcel on their land is located adjacent to Clos Pepe and immediately behind the Kessler-Haak Vineyard. The site is marked by a gorgeous rolling terrain with sandy loam soils. At Machado, the majority of the planting is dedicated to pinot noir with equal amounts of such selections as Pommard, Merry Edwards, Mount Eden, and 459. In addition to pinot noir, we also planted a small, two-acre plot in the sandiest portion of the field to the Sweeney Canyon selection of chardonnay. CRAFT: Only neutral barrels are employed. We strive for whole cluster fermentation. We farm with a focus of ripening the stems alongside the fruit, allowing the cluster to be in harmony. Working with the stems allows for wines that are structured, earthy and balanced with our beautiful SRH fruit. We often use the analogy of roasting fish or meat on the bone, the bone offers complex flavors very different than taking it off of the bone to cook it. CELLARING: All of the single vineyard wines are produced with the intention of aging and cellaring for at least 10 years and can easily be enjoyed after 15 years.
