Joseph Drouhin Description
"Musigny is remarkable for its great purity of colour. The aromas are reminiscent of violet and fruit stone when the wine is young. After eight to ten years, these aromas become very refined and complex: fallen leaves, damp earth, moss and hints of fur or leather. The tasting sensations are incomparable in terms of finesse and harmony. The tannins are elegant, although very much alive. Silk and velvet match the liveliness of the acidity. The lingering aftertaste is dominated by hints of rare, exotic woods as well as candied cherry." - Veronique Boss-Drouhin
Site: Musigny is located on a chalky terrace overlooking Clos Vougeot; it is between two small valleys, the « combe » of Chambolle and the « combe » of Orveaux.
History & tradition: a true pioneer of vine growing in this area was a certain Mucius who owned vineyard on this hillside in Gallo-Roman times. It is really in the early Middle Ages, with the help of the monks, that Musigny rose to the rank it now occupies.
Soil: on a mild incline, with a due east exposure. The brown soil is chalky, strewn with some pebbles and not too clayey.
Vinous: 97 Points
The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru is intense and focused on the nose with red berry fruit, undergrowth, plenty of wilted violets coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame very pure, red berry fruit, a touch of sappiness as it fans out and deepens on the finish. There is something majestic about this Musigny, and the finish is extraordinarily long.
Burghound: 96 Points
A top note of exotic herbal tea combines with an exuberantly floral nose where the whole cluster vinification is a bit more obvious for the moment compared to the prior wines. The incredibly rich, velvety and palate soaking big-bodied flavors are notably more mineral-driven while retaining excellent power and delineation on the incredibly long finish. This is very classy with a superb underlying reserve of material that should allow this stunner of a Musigny to age for the better part of two decades. With that said, it could actually be enjoyed young so good is the density of material.
