Le Ragnaie Description
Le Ragnaie is the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino so far this century. It may be the greatest thing to emerge in Montalcino since the rise of Soldera, with whom they have much in common: an uncompromising adherence to tradition (aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak barrels, ultra-long macerations), natural farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and excellent terroir.
Wine Advocate: 97 Points
The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli has a medium concentration and beautiful aromas of cherries, redcurrants, minerals, watercolours and an overall riper bouquet, at least compared to the Passo del Lume Spento. These vines grow at an altitude of 300 metres on mixed clay soils near Baricci. It is more powerful and has a spicy component with leather or mild tobacco, which changes over time and eventually turns into a certain sweetness. Structurally, this is a very beautiful wine.
Decanter Magazine: 97 Points
From a prime, east-facing parcel on Montosoli’s limestone rich, slatey soil, Casanovina was planted in 1999 and acquired by Le Ragnaie in 2014. Innate breeding oozes from the 2019: gracious and becoming, if not overt. Lifted violet and lavender blossom scents slowly emerge before a trace of sweet damp earth lends a grounding character. This expands over the palate with a generosity of fruit hemmed in by powdery tannins. While imposing at first, they yield supplely. Finishes with succulent, stony minerals. Exciting.
