Winery Notes
Gevrey Chambertin is the most northern of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premiers Crus and 8 Grands Crus. Half of the Premiers Crus of Gevrey lie on the Grands Crus east facing slope ; the other half occupies a steep, southeast facing slope to the north, with calcareous clay soils.
Charmes Chambertin » vineyard is situated on the east facing slope between Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin and Chambertin Grand Cru.
Charmes is derived from Chaume, meaning subtle or thatch indicating the former presence of a field of grain.
2011 Weather Report - Winery
A short, mild and humid winter gave rise to an ear ly bud break of the vines. This was followed by rela tively mild and sunny weather with the flowering period taking place at the end of May, two weeks earlier than the previous year. At this time the soils were very dry and berries produced small, so the rain when it arrived at the beginning of June was most welcome. At the end of June, ear ly July a storm caused some damage in the vineyards. This was followed by alternating good weatherand rainy periods with some hail which contributed to a slowdown in the development of the vine and put some pressure on the vegetation. At the end of July the size of the crop was expected to be small but the quality very satisfying. Starting in the second half of August, favourable weather enabled us to obtain good maturity and we were ready to start the harvest early September. Wonderful climatic conditions prevailed until the very last sheers were laid down and theview was a positive one for the harvest. As far as production is concerned, it is considered a fairlynormal vintage for white wines, but a smaller than average for the red wines - 10% to 15% less. Today the white wines show a consistent quality and are already expressive. They are very fruity, harmonious and well-balanced showing a fresh and subtle acidity. Reds wines: after careful sorting, show freshness, fruit, beautiful colours with a well-rounded body together with a nice structure and ripe tannins. This vintage is characterized by very expressive wines ,representative of Burgundy. They are very elegant, powerful and delicate at the same time.

"Bright full red. Spicy redcurrant, tobacco and earth on the nose. Plump and sweet in the middle, but with good chalky lift to the cherry and spice flavors. A touch dry on the finish, suggesting energetic extraction." - Stephen Tanzer, January 2013
Winemaker Jacques Lardiere, who seemed as full of energy in November as ever despite the brutally busy season around the Hospices de Beaune auction weekend, officially retired at the end of December after more than a quarter century in charge of winemaking here, and it will not be quite the same visiting Jadot in the future. But this important producer will be in good hands under new technical director Frederic Barnier, who has worked alongside Lardiere in recent years. It crossed my mind that Lardiere has been responsible for crafting a greater number of outstanding Burgundies during his career, both red and white, than anyone else I am aware of, and there will be many more from the 2011 vintage (not to mention 2012). Jadot harvested pinot noir during the first ten days of September, said Barnier, bringing in fruit with 11.8% to 12.5% potential alcohol and generally chaptalizing about half a degree. The pHs are not low (they're generally in the 3.6 to 3.7 range), but, said Barnier, "it's an early vintage without an early-vintage character." - Stephen Tanzer
Burghound: 91-93 Points
"An extremely pretty nose exhibits a well-layered aromatic profile of liqueur of red berry fruit, earth and soft spice scents that is trimmed in just enough wood toast to notice. There is a seductive consistency to the solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that ooze a fine dry extract that helps to buffer the moderately firm shaping tannins on the attractively long finish. Like the Clos St. Denis, this is quite refined." - (4/2013)
