2012 Weather report
We eased gently into winter, but the mild weather gave way to very cold temperatures at the beginning of February, and hard frosts caused a bit of damage in some areas. March was far milder, allowing budbreak to begin early. Despite this vigorous start to the growing season, a cooler April slowed growth right down. Two episodes of frost in April and another late episode in mid-May caused damage to some vines, although the extent of this damage was dependent on the vigour of the growth in each case. Pressure from fungal diseases was, right from the start, very high, and the succession of days with heavy rainfall with those with warm, sunny conditions exacerbated the problem. Flowering took place at a time when the weather was alternating between heavy rainfall and cold days. The bunches, therefore, were relatively light in terms of berries due tothe effects of coulure and millerandage. The weather continued to be chaotic throughout summer, with several thunder y stor ms bringing hail to the region (mainly in the Côte de Beaune). The second half of August and the month of September saw the advent of conditions more favourable to ripening, which proceeded well. The low yields we saw helped the grapes ripen fully. Picking began on the17th September, and we received a very pleasant surprise when we saw the ripeness of the grapes coming through on the triage table. Yields were very low for both reds and whites – around a half of the average.
Vinous: 92-94 Points
"The 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains is striking. Hard candy, plums, licorice and sweet spices all meld together in the Vaucrains. Even with all of its richness, the 2012 is showing beautifully today, largely because the vintage has softened some of the contours, resulting in an unusually generous, inviting young Vaucrains. At the same time, there is plenty of depth to reward cellaring. Rose petals, sweet red berries and cinnamon all inform the silky, perfumed finish." - Antonio Galloni, January 2014
