Nv Pierre Gerbais Description
One of Champagne's young guns, Aurelien Gerbais, has been on our radar for a few years now, and we've enjoyed his entire range. A neighbor of Cedric Bouchard who has risen the ranks in the Aube and is making fascinating terroir-driven Champagne from his family's older vines growing on that extended belt of Kimmeridgian soils that flows to Burgundy. The Champange's here are exceedingly interesting, with some of the best use of Pinot Blanc in Champagne, something that we rarely see. This Cuvee is based on the regular Grains de Celles, 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot blanc, but with a small amount of Coteaux Champenois added for color and fruit. The vines are in the village of Celles-Sur-Source, are, on average, 30 years old, and have been cultivated organically since the 90s. This is vinified with wild yeast in a tank and spends 30 months on the lees seeing a low dosage of about 3 g/l. The Grains de Celles is a lovely rose that we highly recommend checking out.
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
Disgorged in April 2018, the 2016 Extra-Brut Grains de Celles Rosé is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of red berries, pear and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, with a pretty core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a youthfully frothy mousse, it's intense and flavorful. This cuvée derives from Gerbais's finest parcels in Celles sur Ource.
